Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, develops when cancer cells grow in the inner lining of the stomach to form a tumor. In many cases stomach cancer takes years to grow. An early detection of stomach cancer drastically improves the chances for a successful outcome and provides more treatment options.
H pylori, a bacteria that infects your stomach, pernicious anemia and polyps in the stomach can increase the chances of stomach cancer development. Other risk factors include smoking, obesity, over-consumption of smoked or salty foods, surgery for stomach ulcers, Epstein-Barr virus infection and exposure to asbestos.
The most common symptoms include stomach pain, a feeling of indigestion, bloating after eating, loss of appetite, vomiting and, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, excessive weight loss and fatigue.
Blood tests, endoscopy, CT scans and a biopsy may be used to diagnose stomach cancer.
Amongst the most common treatment methods are surgery to remove part of all of the stomach, depending on the stage of your cancer, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the two and targeted therapy, where drugs only destroy cancer cells.
