Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancer types that affects mainly men adults, although it can affect any people of any age and sex. Most often it starts in the urothelial cells. Especially if caught at an early stage, the chances of a successful treatment for bladder cancer are very high. However, there are high chances of recurrence. That’s why patients who have successfully been treated need regular followup checks for years, to check if cancer has reappeared. Urothelial carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma are the three types of bladder cancer and describe the type of cell where cancer begins.
Cystoscopy, biopsy, urine cytology and imaging are the tests and procedures used to diagnose bladder cancer and determine its stage.
Surgery is used as a treatment to remove the cancerous tissue. Chemotherapy in the bladder (intravesical) or the whole body (systemic) and radiation are also used to treat bladder cancer. Immunotherapy can be used, too, as a treatment method, where the body’s immune system is triggered to fight the cancerous cells. In many cases, the doctor may suggest a combination of treatment methods.
